Cheap Leather Jacket

Cheap Leather Jacket

A cheap leather jacket is one possession almost everyone owns or has owned at some point in their lives. The luckier among us have owned fancier, more expensive leather jackets that are probably still around, somewhere in some closet.

What makes a leather jacket such a sought after apparel? Well, if you ask the owner of one of these, they'll probably tell you that it's the same concept that has kept jeans in fashion all these years and that leather jackets will never go out of fashion.

Aviator Jacket

Introduction

According to wikipedia, in the early 1900s brown leather jackets were worn by aviators and other members of the military and it was nearly a part of their uniform. Their primary purpose was to keep out the extreme cold the military would face and to keep the wearer warm.

Cultural Influence

Of course, television has always played a big part in shaping fashion, and the case of leather jackets is no exception. While there have been several influences in making leather jackets an evergreen fashion, here are a few I can think of right off the bat:

Yes, I'm talking about Bob Crane from Hogan's Heroes. Col. Hogan is always dressed in his leather jacket, which is called an A-2 jacket. In addition to Bob Crane, the A-2 has been adorned by other actors like Gregory Peck, John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Henry Winkler (during his "Happy Days", Fonzie role).

There are also other icons whose on-screen leather jacket attire have become cultural icons, such as Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones.

In addition to these actors, Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama too have worn A-2 jackets while visiting military installations.

From being a fashion necessity for men, leather jackets quickly took their place in women's wardrobes too.

Leather Jackets in Everyday Life

I cannot think of any other item of clothing that can cause people to become judgmental about the wearer than in the case of someone wearing a leather jacket. Leather jackets are known to be synonymous with being cool, being a rebel and a rule breaker. You can't be mistaken for a banker or a stock broker if you're wearing a leather jacket.

There seems to be a leather jacket made for every possible mood or style, whether you want to look like a biker, a World War II aviator, Keanu Reeves in Matrix, etc. You name it and there's a leather jacket out their for it.

The styles for leather jackets have evolved to include everything imaginable - formal, informal, casual and yes, even bordering on crazy, such as hooded leather jackets.

Buying a Leather Jacket

Choosing a leather jacket for yourself can be a much bigger challenge than you would anticipate. Apart from just looking for the styles that best suit you, there's also a big cost consideration. The best leather jackets are certainly expensive, but then, their durability, the quality of leather used make them and the quality of the jacket, including the style, stitching, etc. make a great value proposition in the long run.

This only gets more complicated if you are buying them online. Buying leather jackets online appeals to many people, including myself because the same jacket is frequently available at a much lower price online than in a store.

Without getting into the nitty gritties of Business and Commerce, this happens because:
  • There are no store overheads (rent, sales commissions, sales staff salaries, etc.) when you buy online.
  • Large online stores run regular promotions and have accepted deep discounting as a cost of doing business.
  • Online stores, especially the larger ones keep their costs low by managing their own warehouses.
  • Online stores typically also have a lower markup on their purchase price. For example, if a brick and mortar store has a purchase price for an item at $100, it can markup the sales price to $200. An offline store that has the same purchase price can keep its marked up sales price much lower.

Cheap Leather Jacket

So, do leather jackets have to cost an arm and a leg or can you find a cheap leather jacket that is excellent in terms of quality and doesn't require you to take out a second mortgage? Or, is there no such thing as a cheap leather jacket?

Well, I have good news -- you can have both - your house and your leather jacket without having to sacrifice one for the other.
Just to clarify though - when I say cheap, I do NOT mean:
  • low quality leather jackets
  • damaged leather jackets
What you do want in ANY leather jacket is a good cut, good quality of leather (or leather substitute that doesn't look like a shimmery, poor copy) and quality worksmanship in the overall finish of the product.
